“Stainless steel lanyard bead is flipped over in the ER40 collet to put some shiny chamfers on the bottom with this @helicaltools .25 inch 5-flute chamfer mill (part 59807). The bead is sitting on top of the remaining bar stock (not visible) so that the collet has something to clamp along its full length.”

Setting MRR Standards With Helical Solutions’ HEV-C-6

Check out this video from Makino utilizing High Efficiency Milling (HEM) toolpaths with Helical Solutions’ HEV-C-6 chipbreaker using Mastercam software. Makino machinists were able to use a Makino PS105 VMC to achieve a new industry standard in MRR for 4140 steel alloy.

Inside the machine, Helical’s HEV-C-6 was spun at 10,695 RPM with Mastercam’s impressively efficient toolpaths to achieve an incredible 40inMRR. 

Helical’s HEV-C-6, a solid carbide 6 flute corner radius end mill for steel, is specially engineered to excel in High Efficiency Milling (HEM). Its offset chipbreaker geometry provides optimal chip evacuation and reduced harmonics at high RPMs. Makino machinists utilized these features with Mastercam’s highly effective tool paths, resulting in a very impressive MRR.

“Turning shaft one after the flame spray welding buildup. Using my trusty @micro100 brazed on tooling for both roughing and finishing. I shoot for .001-.0015 over the maximum tolerance then get to the final finish using emery paper. Using this type of carbide tooling allows me to easily hand grind and hone a sharp cutting edge providing less tool pressure than a traditional insert tool.”

Pocket Milling 

Automag used Helical’s 84496 end mill to pocket mill without coolant at 1040 SFM and 550 IPM to achieve a total depth of 1” at .020” depth per revolution. This ½” diameter tool created multiple .980” diameter holes in 4140 Steel with zero signs of tool failure. 

Plunge Milling

Automag used the same 5 flute tool to plunge mill the sides of the part without coolant at 1308 SFM and 1040 IPM with a 47% spindle load and .125” step-over. Running Helical’s 5 Flute Combination Feed & HEM End Mill the fastest the HAAS will run, resulted in no signs of tool failure.

Teaming up With Autodesk to Test Helical Solutions’ High Feed End Mills

Watch this video taken at Autodesk’s Boston Technology Center. We teamed up with Autodesk to test out our High Feed End Mills in 4140 Steel on their Haas VF5SS. We were able to achieve 550 SFM, 4,202 RPM and 428 IPM!

Designed for high feed applications, Helical’s fully stocked offering of High Feed End Mills take advantage of chip thinning with a specifically engineered end profile for optimal tool engagement and reduced cutting forces.
